Eco-friendly gift

Soy wax-infused food wrap roll

Prep time:  1 hour

Cooking time: About 2 minutes

Replacing plastic wrap, more commonly known as "saran wrap", with reusable wrap is the new eco-friendly DIY that everyone should do. It's easy and green! There are already several beeswax food wraps available, but from a vegan perspective, we are going to replace it with soy wax.

What you need

  • organic cotton fabric
  • 2 ½ tbsp of soy wax
  • 2 tsp of pine resin
  • 1 tbsp of jojoba oil
  • pinking shears
  • silicone brush
  • reusable baking sheet
  • large baking sheet

Preparation

Fabric

  1. Choose your cotton fabric, preferably organic, which will act as your reusable wrap roll
  2. Wash and dry your fabric
  3. Cut the fabric into the desired shapes and sizes you need. We recommend 8x8 inches, 11x11 inches or 14x14 inches.
  4. Use a pinking shears to trim the edges of your fabric to prevent it from fraying.

Soy wax mix

  1. Preheat your oven to 200° F
  2. Prepare a double boiler : Place the soy wax, pine resin and jojoba oil. Cook for about 20 minutes over medium-high heat until the ingredients melt.
  3. Meanwhile, place a reusable baking sheet on a large baking sheet and place your fabrics on top.
  4. Once the ingredients have melted, use a silicone brush to lightly brush the fabric with the mixture. Be careful not to put too much mixture, you can always add more if the result is not good enough.
  5. Bake for about 2 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and look for dry spots or unevenness.. If you notice any, brush the mixture on those areas and place the baking sheet in the oven for 2 minutes.
  6.  When your wraps look good, remove them from the baking sheet and hang them on hangers to dry. Wait a few minutes.

  1. Cut the soap into chunks and place in 3 different measuring cups
  2. Microwave for about 20 seconds and stir each time. Repeat until the soap is completely melted.
  3. Mix the dye  in one of the cups. Set aside.

  5. Place the dividers in the soap mold and pour in your soap mixture one at a time.
